A Look Inside the Cultural Week

Experiencing the showcases, artworks and acts of the festival, it becomes clear how exceptional art sustains and builds a nation's past and essence. The centrepiece was undoubtedly Serge Attukwei Clottey’s stunning [Dis]Appearing Rituals: An Open Lab of Now for Tomorrow, which showcased his groundbreaking afrogallonism in full view: a approach that reimagines water vessels into mesmerizing works of art, tapestries of metallic tones. The show was designed as a testament to the endurance of the historic district, a historical neighbourhood of Accra.

The community – mainly home to the Ga community, a community of fishermen – is also where a great number of returning Africans returned from Brazil and established themselves in the 1830s. Called the Tabom, they carried with them Brazilian tongue and traditions.

All across Jamestown, you can see a mix of architecture. Standing is Fort Vicentia, boasting its unique European-style brickwork and curved entrances. One can also see the famous beacon, built in the 19th century and subsequently featuring its distinctive striped appearance.

A Culture of Remembrance

Also notable about Jamestown is the ever-present sight of funeral posters. Wherever you look, be it plastered over buildings or on larger hoardings, one finds funeral details and terms of mourning. In Jamestown, mirroring customs in Ghana, funerals are large-scale communal events.

In the artist's impressive exhibition, all of the sensory and spiritual landscape of Jamestown are present – particularly in the immersive Jamestown nshonaa work. In this space, visitors are calmed by the sound of the sea with beach material underfoot, while shacks, nets and representations of canoes pay homage to its dynamic, long-standing seafaring tradition. But standing in this venue, it's hard to ignore the mountains of cast-off garments that mar the charm and tranquillity of the area.

In Addition to the Headline Act

There is additional highlights. Within an unfinished structure at the University of Ghana, creator Reginald Sylvester II showcased On the Other Side of Languish, an incredibly moving, minimalist show that displayed three-dimensional works and artworks created in collaboration with artisans.

And then there is the prestigious art award for Ghanaian women creators. It showcased the first solo show of a 2024 recipient, whose work utilizes familial archival records to craft a visual impression of life in the nation's recent history. The event also crowned a latest champion, whose multidisciplinary work is particularly focused on the weaving practices of women in the Volta region.

A Lasting Impact

While the global African community has more and more been drawn home to Ghana in the western winter, a growing cohort are contemplating journeying some months earlier to experience the area's cultural season. Between this festival and other major events, what you’ll find are art scenes that are not merely emerging or “upcoming” but have forged an whole world that is permanent.

In the end, the visit leaves one with a image of Accra that serves as a manifesto for conservation and the preservation of culture. It is a compelling tribute to perseverance in all its expressions.
