Explosion Costs 3 Police Officers While Executing Eviction Operation in the Verona Area
Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the house close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been taken to the hospital.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area revealed the property reduced to a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member set off the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the Interior Minister said.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
The prosecutor was convinced the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
