Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the board at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await following their development".
Summers, who formerly presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed messages showed that Summers communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood the economist's choice to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a bill that would compel the US justice department to release its files on the case.
The measure will afterward head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he plans to endorse the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked emails made public by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications revealed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to influential international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the messages were released with the public, Summers stated he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to restore faith and fix connections with the people closest to me".
Professional History
Summers occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, verified that he was not associated with the group.
The former official entered the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
