How Snooker's Legendary Players Remain Dominant in Their Fifties

Ronnie O'Sullivan celebrates his half-century this year, joining John Higgins that also reached this milestone.

Back when a teenage Ronnie O'Sullivan was questioned regarding his snooker idol in 1990, his response was "he creates new techniques … not many players can do that".

That youthful insight revealed O'Sullivan's unique approach. His ambition isn't limited to mere victory to include redefining excellence within snooker.

Now, 35 years later, he has surpassed the achievements of those he admired while competing in this week's UK Championship, where he holds the distinction of being the most veteran and youngest champion, O'Sullivan will mark reaching fifty.

In professional sports, having just one player of that age would be remarkable, yet his half-century means that multiple top-ranked world players are now in their sixth decade.

The Welsh Potting Machine together with the Wizard of Wishaw, similar to The Rocket turned pro over thirty years ago, also celebrated reaching fifty recently.

However, such extended careers are not guaranteed in this sport. Stephen Hendry, who shares the record alongside Ronnie for most world championships, won his last ranking event in his mid-thirties, while Davis' victory at the 1997 Masters, nearing forty, was considered a major surprise.

This legendary trio, however, stubbornly refuse fading away. This article examines how three veterans stay at the top in professional snooker.

The Mind

According to the legend, now 68, the key difference between generations is psychological.

"I typically faulted my technique when losing, instead of retraining my mind," he explained. "It seemed like inevitable progression.

"These three champions have proven that's not true. Everything is psychological… you can compete longer beyond predictions."

The Rocket's approach was shaped through working with a mental coach, with whom he's collaborated since 2011. In his 2023 documentary, his documentary, O'Sullivan asks him: "How long can I play, to avoid uncertainty?"

"If you focus on age, you trigger negative expectations," he advises. "You'll start thinking 'Oh, I'm 46, I can't perform!' Avoid that mindset. To maintain success, and keep delivering, then ignore age."

This guidance Ronnie adopted, mentioning recently that turning 50 "acceptable," adding: "I try not putting excessive pressure … I appreciate where I am."

The Body

Snooker may not be an athletic sport, winning depends on bodily attributes that typically favor youthful players.

Ronnie stays fit by jogging, but it's challenging to avoid other age-related issues, such as vision decline, something Mark knows intimately.

"It amuses me. I require glasses for everything: reading, medium distance, long distance," Williams shared this season.

The two-time world champion considered lens replacement surgery but postponed it multiple times, latest in autumn, primarily since he keeps succeeding.

Williams might benefit from neuroplasticity, a mental phenomenon.

A vision specialist, who coaches athletes, explained that without conditions like cataracts exists, the mind adapts to weaker eyesight.

"Everyone, by your mid-30s, or early forties, experience the eye lens stiffening," she said.

"But our brains adapt to challenges throughout life, even into old age.

"But, should eyesight isn't the issue, other physical aspects could decline."

"In time in precision sports, your body fails your mind," Davis commented.

"Your arm fails to execute properly. The first symptom I noticed was that although I aimed straight, the speed was off.

"Shot strength is the critical factor and there's no solution. That will occur."

Ronnie's psychological training coincided with meticulous physical care and he frequently emphasizes the role of diet in his achievements.

"He avoids alcohol, consumes nutritious food," said an ex-winner. "You wouldn't guess thirty years younger!"

Mark similarly realized nutritional benefits lately, revealing this year he added pre-game nutrition, which he claims maintains stamina through extended matches.

Although John Higgins lost significant weight recently, attributing it to spin classes, he currently says the weight returned but plans setting up equipment to reinvigorate himself.

Driving Force

"The greatest challenge as you older is practice. That passion for the game must persist," remarked a commentator.

Williams, Higgins and O'Sullivan face similar challenges. Higgins, a four-time world champion, stated in September he finds it hard "to practice regularly".

"However, I think that's normal," Higgins continued. "Getting older, focus changes."

John considered skipping some tournaments yet limited by the ranking system, where major event qualification depends on results in lesser events.

"It's a balancing act," he said. "Negatively affect mental health attempting to attend all these events."

Similarly, Ronnie has reduced his tournament appearances since relocating abroad. The UK Championship marks his first domestic competition this season.

But none seem prepared to retire yet. Like in other sports where legendary rivals like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic motivated one another to excel, similarly O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams.

"When one wins, it raises the question why can't they?" said a pundit. "I think they motivate each other."

The Lack of Challengers

After his latest Triple Crown win this year, O'Sullivan remarked that younger players "must step up despite my age with poor vision, a unreliable arm and knee problems yet they can't win."

While China's Zhao Xintong won this year's world title, few competitors emerged to dominate the tour. Exemplified by this season's results, with multiple champions have taken the first 11 events.

Yet challenging competing against Ronnie, with innate ability rarely seen, as recalled since his youth on television.

"His technique, was obvious instantly," noted, observing the teen rapidly clearing the table to win prizes like outdated technology.

Ronnie often states that winning tournaments "isn't everything."

However, he has suggested previously that losing streaks help maintain drive.

It's been nearly two years without a tournament win, but Davis believes this birthday could motivate O'Sullivan.

"Perhaps that turning 50 provides the impetus Ronnie needs to demonstrate his skill," commented the veteran. "We all recognize his genius, but Ronnie enjoys amazing audiences.

"Should he claim the UK Championship, or the World Championship, it would amaze the crowd… That would be a historic feat."
