Joseph Parker & Fabio Wardley Ready for ‘All or Nothing’ Clash with Opportunity at Oleksandr Usyk on the Horizon

The sport of boxing is in a real slump this year, with a scarcity of big events and far less engaging contests than normal. The prospect of a important and captivating heavyweight battle between Parker and Wardley at the iconic O2 Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. The winner will almost certainly face Oleksandr Usyk next year. In opposition, the loser is likely to lament the inevitable erosion of their hard-won plaudits.

Danger and Risk Define This Clash

Parker finds himself on a hot streak since his most recent setback to fighter Joe Joyce three years ago. The Kiwi veteran, who won a world title in 2016, has been reinvigorated by his change in coaching to the influential Andy Lee. He has triumphed in six straight bouts, earning particular acclaim for the assured style in which he beat Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole.

Wardley has carefully assembled his unbeaten record over 20 bouts, while showing remarkable punching power versus Frazer Clarke in a rematch last season, and, this season, when he stopped Justin Huni with one frightening shot. But Clarke pushed Wardley to the brink when their violent first encounter ended in a draw – and Huni was dominating on the scorecards on all three official tallies before he was pole-axed in the 10th round.

The Understated Allure of The Two Boxers

The understated charm of both men is enhanced by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a championship opportunity. Yet neither is invincible. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, excluding three defeats, he has been knocked down on several occasions by various fighters. He always gets up but Wardley hits harder than any opponent he's encountered – with the exception of Wilder who appeared diminished of a knockout artist when Parker secured a one-sided points victory in the end of 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only began his boxing career when he was 20 years old, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome skepticism over his skill set. But he is equally near to a shot at the title.

“This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight class. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker insists on fighting.

“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he merely needed to be patient for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “It's win or go home. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and what he has done and how he has prepared for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am intending to prove it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the both of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I excel under pressure. The upcoming fight will be the same. The gap between Parker's status and where people think I am has been a common theme during my entire career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a long time, with a numerous contests on his ledger. In no way is he an aged fighter but he has been in the game for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I've also endured brutal fights and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the general belief is that Parker will be too seasoned, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the belief that he is next in line for the champion Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a significant margin.
