Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
