The President Calls Loved Ones of Shot Military Soldiers to White House
President Trump stated on the weekend that he has asked the loved ones of a Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the presidential home.
He mentioned that he conversed with her parents and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Shooting
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was lost her life in a violent incident on Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Gatherings across West Virginia have been held in their honor.
Presidential Invitation
The president explained he’s talked about a White House visit for the families of both members of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a hard experience, arrive at the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” Trump addressed journalists. “And in the same way with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Public Reaction
Mourners gathered over the weekend at the high school in West Virginia to honor Sarah.
Both the soldiers had been working with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s government program to support policing efforts in DC.
Honoring the Soldier
“She was the kind of student that instructors wished for. She carried herself with inner fortitude, a bright grin and a upbeat demeanor that encouraged those around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the leader of her previous school, stated to the Associated Press. “She was kind, considerate and always ready to help others.”
Memorial details for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Legal Steps and Government Revisions
Law enforcement have charged a 29-year-old Afghan national with one count of homicide and two counts of violent assault while armed.
The incident prompted the Trump administration to pause asylum processing and temporarily stop issuing visas to owners of travel documents.
Condition of Andrew Wolfe
Andrew Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, began his service in early 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the AP.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, the state’s governor Patrick Morrisey mentioned on television.
Attorney general Bondi stated on Fox News Sunday that she also intended to visit his relatives.
Memory of Beckstrom
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County high school in 2023 and began her service not long after, serving as a MP with excellence, per the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of kindness and she absolutely had fortitude,” the governor addressed the gathering at the service. “Though her life ended too soon, she has made an impact that’s going to last forever.”
