The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location from which the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
